Art and Veterans
I'm going to skip over the political angle of this article (for once) and point out something buried within the piece: Veterans are a population and demographic who deeply benefit from the arts but are frequently unreached or overlooked by local organizations.
Listen to what this soldier said after experiencing a production of Sophocles' Philoctetes:
“Seeing, through the play, how little had changed about the reality of armed conflict and the experience of the humans tasked with executing it pulled me in very deeply. The warriors and citizens of ancient Greece had the same questions and carried the same trauma as soldiers do today.”
Or this SEAL's experience with a different program:
“You are going 100 miles per hour, and after serving you are slamming on the brakes. The artistic process gives you a pause to start thinking about how you should be living your life now.”
